The Hidden Dangers of AI Therapy

Today, more than ever, AI has played a major role in our everyday lives. From chatbots that answer questions to apps that provide quick “therapy-like” conversations, technology is making mental health support more accessible than ever. This may sound like a good step in the right direction, but it is important to note the dangers that come with using AI for therapeutic support

  1. Lack of Human Connection

    When we think of mental health services, we think of one-on-one conversations with a licensed therapist. Your therapist not only pays attention to what you say, but your body language and your mood. This is something AI can’t pick up on.

  2. Risk of Misinformation

    Data and algorithms are heavily used by AI, and the use of these two components can sometimes generate inaccurate information or misleading responses. Everyone’s mental health is different, and while one method might work for one person, it might not necessarily work for others.

  3. No Crisis Support

    If a client is experiencing suicidal thoughts or ideations, AI is not equipped to provide the necessary support and resources. This can become dangerous for individuals who believe AI can replace professional help.

  4. Privacy Concerns

    Many AI and mental health apps collect sensitive information. If there are no strict regulations, how can we be sure that a client’s information is not being shared or misused?

  5. Oversimplifying Mental Health

    Mental health services aren’t one-size-fits-all. Therapy requires personalized approaches because everyone’s mental health journey is different. AI, no matter how advanced, cannot fully understand your history, cultural background, trauma, or life experiences the way a trained professional can.
