Prioritize You: Honoring Mental Health This May

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — prioritizing your mental health and taking the time to pause, reflect, and check in with yourself can improve your mental health. Focusing on building better relationships, working on your physical health, and overall quality of life is what this month is all about. Most people don’t make time for their mental health. This month is a powerful reminder to change that.

Why Mental Health Matters

Every year, most people go to their primary physician for a physical, and sometimes people go to the doctor more than once a year. But very rarely do people put this type of effort into their mental health. Why is that? There has always been a negative stigma around mental health, but now more than ever, people are choosing to take care of their minds. Anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout are more common than we think — and they don’t always look the same for everyone. Breaking the stigma starts with recognizing that mental health is health.

Simple Ways to Prioritize Your Mental Wellness

Your life doesn’t have to be falling apart to take care of your mental health. Whether you need help overcoming your trauma or you just need someone to talk to, it’s important to know the first step is easier than you think. Here are a few small yet meaningful ways to take action this month:

  • Start your day with intention — Using words of affirmation when speaking about yourself or practicing breathing exercises is a great way to put your mind at ease.

  • Unplug with purpose — Taking breaks from social media or anything that puts you in a negative state of mind should be a priority.

  • Talk it out — Talking to someone you trust and someone who listens can make you feel seen and heard. If you don’t have someone you can talk to, writing in a journal can also be very beneficial.

  • Move your body — Going outside and enjoying nature with a walk or even going to the gym can improve your mental state.
