Talking With Care: Encouraging Your Loved One to Seek Help
Having discussions about one’s mental health is not always easy, especially when you have them with your loved ones. Watching someone you love suffer in silence while you want to help can bring up uncomfortable conversations. But how does one go about this? The truth is, approaching this conversation with care can make all the difference. Here are some steps to guide you.
The right time & place matter
Timing is very important, especially when dealing with one’s mental health. Bringing up your concerns in a private setting where your loved one feels safe can be helpful and make them feel supported.
Lead with compassion, not judgment
Instead of using ‘you’ statements, use ‘I’ statements. For example, saying ‘I’ve noticed you’ve been spending a lot of time alone, are you okay?’ is better than saying ‘You seem depressed’.
Listen more than you speak
Taking the time to actually listen to your loved ones will show them how much you care and will make them not only feel heard but also seen.
Be patient
Acceptance takes time, and although your loved one might not want to act immediately, give them the space to get the help they need on their own terms.
Offer professional help
Researching local therapists and support groups can make the process easier for your loved one when they are ready to take the next step in improving their mental health.
