Navigating Stress: Tools to Protect Your Mental Health

Unfortunately, we all will experience some level of stress, but we can overcome it as well. April is stress awareness month — so it’s time to check-in. Being stressed out can be overwhelming and sometimes people don’t know how to relieve their stress. Here are some ways to lower your stress levels.

  1. Breathe in & out

Telling someone to breathe when they are stressed out can sound a little cliche but believe it or not, breathing exercises do work. The next time you are feeling stressed try breathing in for 4 seconds, holding for 4, and exhaling for 4, then repeat.

  2. Move your body

Exercising is a great way to relieve your stress. Whether you choose to go outside for a walk, run, or do strength training in the gym, physical activity can reduce stress hormones and boost your mood. Working out for at least 30 minutes a day keeps you fit and stress free.

  3. Set Boundaries

Sometimes those around us can cause our stress. It’s important to to protect your time and energy so make sure you are setting clear boundaries at work, with your friends, and limit social media activity.

  4. Get sleep

Getting a quality night’s rest is important for decreasing your stress levels. Not getting enough sleep can make you agitated, drained, and stressed.

  5. Seek Therapy

If you don’t know how to manage your stress, talking to someone is a great way to help you. At MM Therapy we have many licensed therapists that can provide tools for managing stress.

Remember: Stress is a normal part of life, but it doesn’t have to run your life. Small, consistent steps can lead to better balance and a healthier mind.
