How to Decompress After a Stressful Week

Feeling stressed during the week is something we all have faced. Although weeks are filled with deadlines, responsibilities, and emotional ups and downs, it’s important to know how to decompress. Giving yourself permission to pause and reset is the first step.

Here are a few gentle ways to decompress after a stressful week:

Unplug and Disconnect

If you’ve been on your phone more than usual during the week, by the time the weekend comes around, try to limit your screen time. Constant notifications and social media updates can be draining, so set an hour or more aside to unplug — no emails, no scrolling. The next time you feel tempted to grab your phone, try grabbing a book to read instead.

Move Your Body

Working out is a great way to relieve stress. You don’t have to do a strenuous workout in the gym; you can go for a walk.

Create a Calming Routine

Do something small. Light a candle, play your favorite playlist, and enjoy a long, warm shower. Routines like this can signal to your brain that it’s time to relax and reset.

Reflect and Release

At the end of a long week, take the time to reflect. What went well? What challenges did you overcome? Journaling your thoughts or just talking it out can be very therapeutic.

Rest Without Guilt

Rest isn’t something you earn; give yourself permission to unwind and rest without feeling guilty.

Remember, decompression is about creating space for yourself to recharge. By intentionally taking time to relax and restore, you give yourself the energy and clarity needed to approach the next week with a calmer mindset.

If you’re finding it difficult to unwind or manage ongoing stress, consider talking to a therapist. At MM Therapy, our clinicians can help you explore healthy coping strategies and build balance into your everyday life.
